Make Poverty History Manitoba is calling on mayor and city councilor candidates to commit to providing eligible low-income Winnipeggers with 80 percent off the cost of a monthly transit pass. We are also calling for a timeline for introducing fare free transit for all.
A pilot project in Germany has tested the waters on reduced transit:
“Germany’s three-month experiment with €9 ($12 CAD) tickets for a month’s unlimited travel on regional train networks, trams and buses saved about 1.8m tons of CO2 emissions.
Since its introduction on June 1 to cut fuel consumption and relieve a cost of living crisis, about 52m tickets have been sold, a fifth of these to people who did not ordinarily use public transport.”
Want to help us make this a reality in Winnipeg? Email mayor and councilor candidates now to tell them you support lower transit fares.
